With support and expertise of the staff of Glasgow University Chemistry Department, pupils will investigate the issues surrounding the production and use of the biofuel, biodiesel. The scope of career opportunities available within the world of Chemistry will also be an integral part of the day.

Initially the pupils will consider the implications of sustained use of fossil fuels as an energy source.  This will lead on to an exploration of the alternatives.  The viability of each will be debated, using arguments representing a balance of ethics, economics and science.

Practical abilities will be enhanced as the pupils are guided through the process of biodiesel synthesis.  They will then have the opportunity to analyse the samples and compare them to industry standards.  The analysis will incorporate high specification bomb calorimetry and the interpretation of gas chromatography data amongst other techniques.
