Build It 25th-27th January 2012

Join us and our construction experts as we explore the world of big building projects.  We have a range of workshops and drop in activities where you can meet engineers and learn about the different sorts of skills needed in a huge project like a new road or massive building.

Here is what you can do:

Fantastic Forces – Investigate Newton’s three laws are the building blocks of motion using balloons, rockets, a bed of nails and other amazing demonstrations.  CfE: Forces
P4-S2

Institution of Civil Engineers – Bridges for Schools workshop
Work in teams with real Civil Engineers to construct a cable stayed bridge that you can walk along and then take apart again.  Learn about teamwork, civil engineering and the skills needed to construct a bridge.
P6 and 7

Scrapheap Towers – Build the tallest tower you can from the materials provided. Select the materials for your tower wisely though because any waste will count against you!
P4-P7 CfE: Topical Science, Technologies

FULLY BOOKED Construction Skills College - Taylor Woodrow Tower Workshop – Work in teams to become a mini construction company, planning, designing, buying materials and finally building a tower so that your company makes as much money as possible.

Meet the Expert

We will also have some drop in activity from engineering experts available on the science mall floors.  Take some time to visit experts from BAE Systems, Institution of Structural Engineers and Strathclyde University to try out some hands on activities and find out more about the role of engineers.
