The Polymerase Chain Reaction - Biotechnology Workshop (S6)
Give your advanced higher biology students the opportunity to meet and work alongside practising MRC Virologists!
Pupils can share in their expertise and gain a genuine insight into the world of work.
Look out for further dates in 2010! Sign up to our e-newsletter for updates.
-
Using cutting edge equipment (Polymerase Chain Reaction and gel electrophoresis) pupils investigate and diagnose virus infections in our state-of-the-art laboratory.
-
Students are guided through the process of using the polymerase chain reaction and other molecular biology techniques.
-
Experts explain the theory behind the experiments and involve pupils in a discussion on the ethics of recent advances in DNA technology.
Advanced Higher Biology - Nucleic Acids; Applications of DNA technology; Practical abilities
Full day workshop (9:45am - 3.30pm), £12 per pupil.

Pupil Comments:
"Having a visual process of PCR and doing the experiment ourselves using hi-tech equipment has made it much easier to understand the process."
"The scientists and staff were very friendly and encouraging - explaining everything in great detail to make it fun and interesting." "I found the practical work very useful in letting me experience lab work - this has increased my interest in virology, encouraging me to take a career in biological research".
