Advanced Higher Biology - Nucleic Acids; Applications of DNA technology; Practical abilities

Give your advanced higher biology students the opportunity to meet and work alongside practising MRC Virologists - Share in their expertise and get a genuine insight into the world of work!

Students will use cutting edge equipment (Polymerase Chain Reaction and gel electrophoresis) in their investigations to diagnose virus infections in our state-of-the-art laboratory.  Students will be guided through the process of using the polymerase chain reaction and other molecular biology techniques.  Experts will be on hand to explain the theory behind the experiments.  Participants will also be encouraged to discuss the ethics of recent advances in DNA technology.  An experience not to be missed!

Cost:  £12 +VAT per pupil (An invoice will be sent to your school prior to the day.)

Full day workshop (9:45am - 3.30pm)

Download PowerPoint presentation complete with 3D animations!

Pupil Comments:

"Having a visual process of PCR and doing the experiment ourselves using hi-tech equipment has made it much easier to understand the process."

"The scientists and staff were very friendly and encouraging - explaining everything in great detail to make it fun and interesting."
"I found the practical work very useful in letting me experience lab work - this has increased my interest in virology, encouraging me to take a career in biological research".
